Lemon - painting a day

"Lemon" 5x7" oil on canvas panel [$75+shipping at my Etsy store]

When I was rummaging around the kitchen for something to paint, I found some lemons hiding at the bottom of the fruit bowl, and decided to paint this one sitting in my favorite Japanese bowl. I really like the subtle colors in this painting, rather different from the more dramatic colors I chose for the last few paintings.

Apple Slice - painting a day

"Apple Slice" 5x7" oil on canvas panel, available at my Etsy store.

It seemed like a logical progression once I cut the apples in half to keep going and create ever smaller sections. Who knows where this will end? I do feel I really caught the color of the green glaze in this little Japanese dish.

And on the science nerd side of life, I've been reading about color vision in other animals - it turns out some animals, like geckos and hawkmoths can see color in very low light conditions. Almut Kelber has been doing some very creative research determining whether these organisms can see different colors. Humans of course can't see color in low light conditions, so in the moonlight everything looks gray.

Heart Shadow - painting a day

"Heart Shadow" 5x7" oil on canvas panel SOLD

The title for this painting came to me in the middle of painting. I set the light to emphasize the dimple around the stem, but didn't really notice the shape of the shadow until I was painting it. I found capturing the shape of the cut face even more challenging than painting bowls and plates.

Couple of Apples - painting a day

"Couple of Apples" 5x7" oil on canvas panel [$75+shipping] at my Etsy store

After taking a few weeks off to spend time with family and do some traveling, I'm back in the studio again. I did a little grocery shopping looking for some good subjects, and found these very stripy apples called cameo apples. I haven't tasted them yet, so I don't know if their insides are as interesting as their outsides.

And a special note to all of you who have supported this venture over the last year by collecting my paintings and prints: thanks for making it possible for me to keep on making art! I'm looking forward to another fun and productive year.
